1st Saturday Chess Tournaments
Budapest, HUNGARY

2nd Round

During the morning I spent 8 hours visiting the city, I must say I liked the city a lot, its buildings are from the start of the 20th century and walking by its streets it's like traveling to the past (except those cars and shops).

After 8 hours of walking (and a visit to Pizzahut) I arrive at the Hungarian Chess Federation, the 2nd round is about to start :-)

 2nd round has started

1st Saturday Chess Tournaments International Arbiter

There's a table where all the players can take a look at their results and their next opponents. They can also get drinks or something to eat during games outside the playing hall in another room of the Hungarian Chess Federation. Mr. Nagy has everything under control and I suppose the players likes his style of managing a chess tournament.

Mr.Nagy and Pablo Sierra (CV News Section Editor)

Today Ivo Timmermans is playing (he got a bye in the 1st round) and his opponent is IM Attila Schneider from Hungary. As I take a look at the board I notice they're playing the Sicilian Defense...

Timmermans, I (2180) - IM Schneider, A (2335)

There's another interesting game taking place, Etan Ilfeld (from Israel) is playing vs. Gellert Papp (from Hungary). They won their 1st round games so it's a good clash between these early leaders. As I'm standing pondering their position I wonder if Etan finally went to The Cranberries concert that took place last night in Budapest. He was concerned about arriving there and not finding tickets. Mr. Nagy told me later that he indeed had watched the concert. :-)

Is Etan Ilfeld thinking about the position or...
simply thinking about The Cranberries concert?

Taking a look at the 1st round results, I notice that non-rated player Vladislav Simakov won his game vs. Danish player Mads Svendsen; today he's facing 1st Saturday Tournament's webmaster András Bacsi (who kindly sends me all the games of the tournaments after every round of play so they're available for download at Chessville).

Simakov, V - Bacsi, A (2065)
 Zoltan , A (2045) - Svendsen, M (2100) on the left

Today WIM Adina Bogza got the bye in the IM Section. I was going to interview her as she's the only female player in the tournament but she isn't here; I suppose she's resting or visiting the city or buying something (Budapest has a bunch of good shops where you can spend your money).  I'll email Mr. Nagy and see how I can contact her to to arrange an interview for Chessville :-)

Have I talked about shopping? As I walked through Budapest I was amazed to find that in many shops they sell pretty hand made chess boards and chess sets; I couldn't resist the temptation - I bought a nice one with magnetic pieces also!

Back to chess...I take a look at Jyrki Pesola´s (from Finland) game. Mr. Nagy introduced him to me in the 1st round, he's a computer expert but he likes chess too.

 Lakat, G (non rated) - Pesola, J (2095)

Another young player is Mads Svendsen (from Denmark), he has been looking to me several times during the tournament (maybe he's disappointed because I'm not playing) so it's my time to look to his game (Sicilian Defense) vs. András Zoltan (from Hungary). He will finish winning as Black in 40 moves.

Zoltan, A (2045) - Svendsen, M (2100)

IM Kim Pilgaard is facing a strong opponent today, GM Csaba Horvath from Hungary. I will have time to congratulate him as his game finished in 20 moves with a draw, a nice result vs. a strong opponent.

GM Horvath, C (2505) - IM Pilgaard, K (2430)

We have time to talk after his game - he asks me about the article and I answer him that it will be ready in a week and that he'll have a spot in it.  ;-)  He'll contact me as soon as he reads it.  I'll try to convince him to annotate his favorite game from this November 2002 tournament for Chessville (please Kim, accept my invitation or I'll lose my job!)
