The Rapid Spirit

By Cem Berk

From the Editor...  Cem is a Tournament Director with the International Email Chess Group (IECG) for the Rapid Tournaments Office, in addition to other duties, including Chair of the New Events Committee and Rules Commission Member.  He was born in 1984 in Istanbul, where he is studying in the engineering faculty of Istanbul University in the department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. He graduated from Adile Mermerci A.L. high school in 2002 at which he was captain of the school chess team for years. He plays basketball and loves rock music, along with enjoying reading and Mathematics.  Here is his report on The Rapid Spirit:

When it comes to correspondence chess via E-mail, IECG is one of the most esteemed servers with 8 years of experience and a rapid increase in the number of members each year.  IECG provides Internet users with the opportunity to  play  rated  email chess games with people all over the world for free.  Joining IECG is easy, all you need to do is to log on the website and fill in some details.  Then an experienced tutor from tutorials office will train you in a friendly atmosphere and when he/she makes sure that you are ready to play, you get your IECG ID to join any IECG event any time during the year.

"Rapid" Correspondance Chess?  Rapid Tournaments have some specific rules on IECG particularly because of the time limits we offer.  The time limit is in the tradition of the Fischer Clock, with 10 days and +1 day for each move.  This time limit prevents any long delays which might create a boring atmosphere for players.

I have recently taken over the Rapid Class Tournament from Class Tournament Office in an attempt of a controlled move to a new event: Rapid Tournament.  The main idea of this event is to combine 8 Classes into 3 Rapid Divisions.  We will offer some wide range groups and launch the groups very quickly. The new Rapid Divisions will be RH (high 2000+ ), RI (Intermediate 1600-1999), and RL (low –1600).  We also offer World Championship entries to tournament winners, which is an opportunity to see their name in hall of fame and win some prizes by our sponsors.  This event will take place in January 2003 but you can request a Rapid Class Tournament now.

RTO Web Team has already published a web site at http://iecgrto.cjb.net.  I also offer some recent news on Rapid Tournament on a newsletter created for Rapid Players.  This has already received attention from many IECG players, who want to join the Rapid Spirit to test themselves and have a chance to increase their rating rapidly.  I hope to see you playing in this exciting event and wish you a successful chess career!
