White threatens a fatal assault with the queen via the
weak light squares around Black's king with 2.Qg6+ Kf8 3.Rh8 mate;
Black can not prevent this plan by covering g6 with the queen, because
h7 is also weak: 1...Qe8 2.Qh7+ Kf8 3.Qg7 mate.
But White has some weak squares of his own - the dark
squares around his own king - and the only thing standing between an
invasion by the black pieces is that pawn on a2. So what's an
enterprising player about to go down in flames on the king-side to do?

Black has accomplished two things with this sacrifice:
first he cleared a path for the black queen to invade on those dark
squares, this is called a clearance sacrifice; and secondly he lured
by force (attraction) the white king onto the a-file so that Black's
next move results in check - maintaining the initiative and again
preventing White's king-side attack from getting started.
2...Qa8+ 3.Kb2
3.Na5 only delays the inevitable one additional move.
