Knight's Tour

Knight's Tour Version 2.1 - Instructions
This program is in the public domain.

The Knight's Tour is a simple game of skill. The object of the game is to move a knight (one of the playing pieces in a chess game) on a chessboard such that every square on the board is covered once and only once. It's not as easy as it might sound. There are multiple solutions to the Knight's Tour; however, after trying and failing to cover every square a few times, you may have a hard time believing it!  Download this 11 KB zipped file.

PGN Notation
 Language Converter

This freeware utility was been coded by Dimitris Siskopoulos based on an idea of Andreas Prapopoulos.  The aim of this software is to convert Chess Notation between English and French, German, Greek, Italian, Polish and Spanish.. An attempt is made to make the conversion similar to the pgn notation standards in order the converted notation in English language can be readable by a chess playing software.  This file can also be downloaded here: http://www.code.gr/chess-converter/

FEN to PGN Utility
by Zeno Marin

Install this handy utility, then drag the FEN file over the window displayed and when the indicator reaches 100%, you should find a new file inside the very same folder of the FEN file you chose to drag. Only that this file is a PGN file.  It is a new file, having the same name, but a PGN extension.

Eg: You have C:\MyFolder\MyFile.fen.  You drag it over the program. Now you find 2 files in that folder:  C:\MyFolder\MyFile.fen and C:\MyFolder\MyFile.pgn.  What could be simpler?

Tactics In the Openings
compiled by Richard Scholler

Richard Schollar has taken nearly a thousand games with a tactic in the first 10 moves (although there are some 13 movers too.) and made them available to all as a free downloadable database in ChessBase format.  He's included training questions and an analysis of the winning combination (thru CB8).  This is a great way to study an overlooked part of opening preparation and sharpen your tactical vision at the same time.

PGN Utilities
from Tom McCormick

A collection of freeware pgn utilities, including PGNTRIM5 for "normalizing"...a process of cleaning PGN syntax errors and producing consistent output files.  A combination of these utilities may be used to remove duplicate games within one PGN file, or to set the sequence of games within one PGN file, such as sorting games in order of YEAR, or ECO code, or Result, etc.  A few additional utility programs may be used in special situations...  This file was updated by the author in late 2006 to include many new utilities as well as enhancements to existing ones.

11,000+ Master-GM Short Mates
from Tom McCormick

11,726 of the best Master-GM short checkmates, past & present, in PGN format, from Tom McCormick.  "I have sifted through my checkmates collections and separated only those games (for the most part) involving present and classic Masters and Grandmasters rated 2350+ by FIDE Oct 2007 list, or Dr. Arpad Elo's classic book for the "Classic" players such as Steinitz, Lasker, etc.  There are more than 11,000 of such games, and I have then sorted those by length of game...so the 6-move checkmates appear first, then 7-moves, etc. I stopped after 39 move games since I was trying to provide educational material to new and intermediate players.  The games have all been normalized using PGNTRIM6.EXE (freeware), and nearly all duplicate games have been removed."  Games include wins (and losses, in some cases!) by players such as: Alexander Alekhine, Geza Maroczy, Paul Keres, Viswanathan Anand, Edward Lasker, Pillsbury, Segei Karjakin, Arthur Dake, Michael Adams, Jose Raul Capablanca, Ernst Falkbeer, George Koltanowski, Frank Marshall, Paul Morphy, Mieses, Tim Krabbé, Henry Bird, Janowsky, Kevin Spraggett, Richard Reti, Nimzowitsch, Greco, Howard Staunton, Henry Grob, Joseph Blackburne, Stuart Conquest, Hans Kmoch, Irina Krush, Amos Burn, Wilhelm Steinitz, Max Lange, Francisco Vallejo Pons, Mikhail Chigorin, Bobby Fischer, Garry Kasparov, Rashid Netzmetdinov, Isaac Kashdan, Ekaterina Korbut, Alexei Shirov, Seigbert Tarrasch, ...Must I go on?
