News from DENSA, the low IQ society.  The Guinness Book Of World Records used to be packed overwhelmingly with interesting and useful facts.  Recently however, alongside legitimate achievements, it seems to be catering for those inflicted by a sub-Warholian craving for their devalued 15 seconds of fame.

Take, for example, the official Guinness stance on Mind Mapping.  This is a note-taking technique devised by educationalist  Tony Buzan which has attracted millions of devotees worldwide and enjoys book sales in over fifteen languages.  There has even been a Mind Mapping world championship organised since the late 1990’s. The current champion is Phil Chambers of the UK. However, when Mind Map enthusiasts approached Guinness to seek to establish world records in their field this was the paraphrased gist of the Guinness rejection:

Concerning the 'World's Longest Mind Map', we are unable to accept this as a Guinness World Record.  We receive over 60,000 enquiries a year from which only a small proportion are approved to establish new categories.  These categories are not 'made up' to suit an individual proposal, but rather 'evolve' as a result of international competition in areas which naturally invite superlative achievements of the sort that we are interested in.  We are of course bound to favour those that reflect the greatest public interest.

I therefore decided to take a look for myself to ascertain whether Guinness is dumbing down or not, and to discover if their response is an honest appraisal of the situation or pure hypocritical cant?

In the edition I checked there is no indication that any Mind Sports titles have ever existed.  Indeed, the total space devoted to mental  world records in the entire book is less than that  given to the following - now infamous - feat by Kathryn Ratcliffe (UK), who:

"...on 25 October 2003 and with a tally of 138, broke her OWN record for the most Smarties eaten in three minutes using chopsticks”.

Does this reflect - as Guinness themselves claim of their criteria - something not made up to suit an individual proposal, but rather an exploit mirroring the greatest public interest in an arena of evolved international competition?  I think not!

Meanwhile, Bob Wade, OBE, the Commonwealth grandmaster, set a world chess record when he competed in the Staunton Memorial tournament in August, 2008 at Simpson’s-in-the-Strand.  At the age of 87 he was the oldest player ever to appear in an all-play-all grandmaster tournament, though I doubt that this feat will cause much of a stir in the DUMBED DOWN, pants-obsessed, bungee- jumping HQ of Guinness World Records.  I should remind Guinness that the UK Schoolchildren’s Chess Championship attracts a world record 74,000 entries each year,   while the European Union chess championship in Liverpool in September 2008 received 65 million hits on their website, but they are doubtless far too occupied with counting their smarties to take notice. Last but by no means least, MIND MAPPING  enjoys a world wide audience and market of many many millions-surely Guinness are missing out on an opportunity here!

GRANDMASTER BREAKS THE CODE IN MYSTERY OF HIDDEN GRAVE

A chess grandmaster has cracked an intellectual puzzle in an attempt to help police solve a murder mystery.
The Masquerade-like conundrum was drawn up in a police station cell by a man who says he knows the spot where a woman’s body is buried in a shallow grave.  Raymond Keene, a former British chess champion and a chess correspondent of The Times stayed awake until 4.30am yesterday studying the man’s scribblings on two sheets of paper after he was called in by police desperate to end the six-month mystery.  Overnight Keene deduced that the body of Therese Terry, a 43-year-old divorcee from Preston, Lancashire was buried near Limerick, Ireland...
