Chess Similes This essay was
submitted by Cindy Solomon, who wrote saying:
"Hello, My
son, Stuart Solomon, is 12 years old. He attends the 7th grade at Albany
Middle School in Albany, California. He plays and studies chess with
teachers from the Berkeley Chess School at different locations several times
a week. Stuart [would] much rather play chess than do homework. I
share with you what he wrote for his English class assignment. His
proud mom, Cindy Solomon"
Here is Stuart's essay, enjoy!
Chess Similes
by Stuart Solomon
I’m like the pieces in a chess set. Each piece has different
qualities and I express all of them at different times of my life depending
on the situation.
I’m like the game of chess. I use strategy to achieve my goals. I’m very
good at chess and all the pieces have special meanings to me.
I’m like the king because I’m a good leader. The king is the commander and
is in charge of everyone else on the board and everyone else protects him.
The game revolves around where the king is on the board. Even though
sometimes I have other people protect me and I watch them in action, I can
still take action myself.
I’m like the queen who is the most powerful piece in the game. As long as
she has back-up, she can dominate the entire board. In things I’m good at, I
can dominate others like in games that I’ve mastered that include chess,
video games, game boy and various others.
I’m like the knight because the knight has a very strange and creative
movement pattern. It’s the only piece that can jump over other pieces and
not be blocked. Sometimes I don’t let other people get in my way and I can
be very creative and resourceful to achieve my goal. For example, I have a
strategy when I’m chased to slow down unpredictably so my opponent zooms in
front of me and then takes time to recover.
I’m like the bishop. The bishop can sneak through narrow gaps between pieces
and can move across the board in a very sly manner diagonally. I’m small and
quick so I can duck through places that other people can’t.
I’m like the rook. The rook goes forward and sideways, never diagonally. The
rook loves open rows, so anything that comes in its way is immediately dealt
with. I like to deal with things immediately as they come up and not let
them pile up and get in my way. I’m also very straightforward and don’t like
beating around the bush.
I’m like the pawn. The pawn only moves forward. Its very true to the king
and will keep on going even if in danger. The pawn will only take a step
sideways if it has a chance to capture another piece. The pawn is very
loyal, works well in a group with other pawns, and is willing to be
sacrificed to save other pieces. When I have an idea, I stick to it and I
never turn aside. I am very loyal and I honor my word. I work well in a
group with my friends watching my back and me watching their backs, like in
a chain – so you can’t defeat or criticize one of us without demeaning all
of us.
