Chess News North America

Big time chess arrives in USA then goes around the world with American savvy:

Nashville International Studios announces production of a 2-hour television program on chess. Spokesperson Rob Mitchell said that the match, New York City, USA, versus St Petersburg, Russia, is a 2 rounds match over 4 boards played at distance chess, and will be the biggest televised broadcast of a chess event of all time.  Historically, said Mitchell, it reconnects the two countries since the last distance play event over 60 years ago.  It is understood that several world champions will be playing, and that there is massive media interest which is planned to be uplinked to 50+ countries around the world.

Official press releases and additional information are pending.

Chess Masterminds July 10th, 2005

There is an historic chess match taking place: Four Russian Grandmasters vs Four American Grandmasters.

Chess News North America

A rare picture of the five Polgars taken recently in Las Vegas.  The three sisters, Sophia, Susan and Judit, pictured here with their parents, took part in a major chess event in the city.
The USCF seem to have endorsed a “Brain Pill” named Natrol from a sponsor.  Following uproar from the chess community over what has been called irresponsible practice, and revelations about a law suit in California suing the manufacturer of the product for $250,000 for false advertising, the endorsement has mysteriously disappeared from USCF’s website.

There has also been complete silence over the affair by USCF politicians until this interchange occurred in a newsgroup between a financial advisor to USCF and the VP of USCF:

“Don says we'll get a lot of funding from these folks.”

What an OUTRIGHT LIE!  I shall make the following motion to the Executive Board:

Stan Booz, an advisor to President Marinello and Chair of Co-Chair of the Finance Committee has stated on the Internet that Don (with the clear implication that I am that Don) said we will get a lot of funding from the Brain Pill people. This is his second implication to a wide audience that Stan has made implying I had some involvement in the Brain Pill Deal. I therefore move by objections procedure that President Marinello explain how the deal came about, who was involved and who if anyone said we'll get a lot of funding from these folks. Rationale for Motion: I personally have no idea as to the answers of these questions but since Stan Booz has brought since this question to the attention of the world I think we need to find out. If there are no objections to this motion by June 24 it passes.

 - Don Schultz

So far silence has been the stern reply, until...

...the following was posted:

"President Marinello has made a Board motion to remove me [Don Schultz] as Secretary.  Secretaries are elected by the EB and this would not effect my status as an EB member but it is a huge unprecedented act.

Here is a copy of her email to the Board: I have placed my replies to her items of complaint in bold and quotes following each item:

>From Beatriz Marinello:

I would like to introduce the following motion to the USCF Executive Board:

Beatriz Marinello:" Move to remove Donald Schultz as USCF Secretary.  If this motion passes it should be effective immediately."  Rationale for Motion: Mr. Schultz has not dealt with his Secretarial duties in a fair and impartial matter.  An Ethic's complaint

DS: “The filing of an Ethics complaint is not simply an unsubstantiated complaint by one person.”

has been filled against USCF Secretary Don Schultz.   Additionally, recent events indicate the need to address the issue of having a Secretary that is in charge of running the election and at the same time acting as a campaign manager for some candidates running for a position in the USCF Executive Board.

Here are more detailed explanations on my statement.

1)  Back in February 2005, Mr. Schultz ruled initially to accept one of the candidate' statement after the deadline announced to all candidates for the submission of their political statements.  Once I was informed about this ruling and I complaint about it, Mr. Schultz changed his ruling in favor of enforcing the deadlines giving to the candidates.

DS: “That is incorrect. The only ruling I made was not to accept it.”

2) The USCF Secretary has the duty to review the list of voters prior to sending the ballots for the election.  There are two issues here which are very serious:

a) Since Mr. Schultz is not an impartial Secretary, he could share this list with the candidates he is supporting.  At the same time, the other candidates need to purchase the labels for their mailings, and they do not get a complete list of eligible voting members since some members request not to receive mail other than Chess Life Magazine and membership forms.

An investigation should be conducted to determine if Mr Schultz has indeed acted in unethical fashion by using this privilege of obtaining this confidential information for this own political agenda and in favor of the candidates to whom he declares himself the Campaign Manager.

DS: “I don’t understand this. The voters are everyone over 16, there are 48,000 of them.”

b) The USCF Secretary has the duties of coordinating the logistic for the election.  Mr. Schultz was too busy traveling around the country campaigning for his candidates that he did not insure that the information given to the printer with instructions on the procedures for printing and mailing the ballots was adecuate.  This negligent action helped create the mishandling of the printing of the ballot.  Now, we are correcting the mistake, its costing the USCF around $20,000.-

DS: “The contact with the printer has never been done as far as I know by the Secretary. That aside the instructions to the printer was fine. The problem was there are two ink jet printing nozzles used by the printer – one for the magazine address and one for the verification data on the ballot inside the magazine. During a run of 5,000 of the magazines the nozzle that was supposed to print the verification data was turned away at a 90 degree angle.” The printer has conceded that the error was his.

3) The endorsement of candidates by the Secretary is not banned by the USCF Bylaws.  However, Mr. Schultz admitted that he wrote part of Mr. Channing's political statement for the May and June Chess Life Magazine.  Mr. Schultz admitted putting in Mr. Tanner's
endorsement of Channing using Tanner's title of the Chess Trust Trustee, in violation of the code of ethics adopted by US Chess Trust in relation with the USCF election.

Mr. Schultz is not a neutral supervisor of the election and has a clear conflict of interest.  Therefore, Don Schultz should step down as Secretary.

DS: “And the president endorsed candidates using official USCF letterhead with the USCF logo. She supported candidates while she was acting Chief Operating Officer something never been done before. Secretaries have routinely, in the past endorsed and actively supported candidates as have all Board members.”

Please Pat check when the Executive Board members are available for a conference call.  Thank you, Beatriz Marinello"

Chess News North America

It should have been called "Susan Polgar Week"

Grand Opening of the Susan Polgar South Texas Chess Center, was May 28th.  The other Susan Polgar Chess Center is in Forest Hills, N.Y.  The New York City resident said she decided to lend her name to the South Texas Chess Center after learning about local efforts to establish a center during her visit to Corpus Christi last month to raise money for the St. Patrick's Elementary Chess Team.
From TheParrot's mailbag:  Dear Parrot,  In just a few short years Susan Polgar has become the single most important name in American chess.  Hikaru Nakamura is a great story, and there are many other notables.  But nobody else in American chess can pull in a crowd of chess players as well as Susan can.  Outside of Kasparov or Karpov or Spassky or Fischer, I doubt any other player in the world can match her chess celebrity.  Susan knows the importance of injecting personality into chess.  Susan has shown the bystanders what chess promotion really is, and the importance of the personal element.  Susan is showing how very successful chess promotion can be for both the promoter and for the chess community.  Susan is now a force.  The donations she sparked in south Texas for the new chess center is only the latest tangible sign of her impressive personal skills and rising status.  Susan's influence is growing, and her best days are ahead. - Gene M

USCF had signed a contract with the participants of the Silver Medal Winning US Olympic team, which has not been paid.  Four remedial attempts to negotiate by the team have been rejected by USCF, and the deadline for the current offer was Monday May 30th.  Will we see another law-suit requiring USCF to meet its legal contractual obligations?

Meanwhile a letter by USCF President, Beatriz Marinello, has been published by proxy, a statement strongly critical of Susan Polgar, who seems to have offered to raise and guarantee a sum of $40,000 to promote ’06 Olympiad chess activities.
In a similar vein, the USCF are seeming to refuse sending a team to the ’06 Olympiads if they do not control the team – refusing outside sponsorship even if the result is that no team represents USA, or only wealthy players who can afford their own expenses, rather than the best team with the best chance of bringing home another medal.
And Its…Venturing into uncharted territory has been part of Susan Polgar's repertoire since she was 4. That's what brought her to Salt Lake City on Friday. As a guest at a chess festival named in her honor, the grandmaster will arrive with an agenda to promote the game, especially for young children and girls.

"I want more exposure for the game. Chess needs somebody out there to speak out on behalf of chess," Polgar says.  The Susan Polgar Chess Festival runs through Sunday in various locations in Salt Lake City. (Photo courtesy of Susan Polgar).

"[The Polgar Chess Festival] will get kids more motivated and excited to play, especially girls," Stephanie Pitcher says. "I think it will inspire a lot of girls to just be able to meet Susan and see what she's done and the things she's gone through to fight for chess."

Memorial Day Tournament Turnout: The Texas State & Amateur in Fort Worth drew about 500 players.

Meanwhile, the current edition of Chess Life, USCF’s monthly print magazine, contains material and ribald language of what is usually coyly termed of an ‘adult nature’ concerning the nature of some Hungarian female chess players.  There have been Board member expressions of regret, but no one has yet claimed any responsibility.

Meanwhile, somewhere in the Cumberland Gap, TN, a new storm is gathering at Chess HQ on USCF election procedures on using staff time and resources for personal messages to voters. There are no official confirmations or denials, except that motions may be proposed… This appears to be the third election related “issue” so far… zzzz

So what did happen in Nashville last week? Only the biggest chess event on the planet! 5,300 youths took part in a tournament there. You may not have heard about it since the organizers (USCF) turned down free TV coverage, and did not return calls to the Governor of Tennessee who wished to attend.
Meanwhile, in the same state of Tennessee, cost estimates for moving USCF headquarters from New Windsor, NY, and rebuilding are edging above the three-quarters of a million dollars. The building in New Windsor fetched $515,000, minus exactions. A new item of news is that there are restriction on its wetland proposed site.

Associated press reports: Kasparov assaulted in Moscow.  We have just learnt (from Russian radio) that Garry Kasparov was attacked after a meeting with youth activists in Moscow he was approached by a participant with a chessboard seeking an autograph. The young man circled Kasparov and delivered a sharp blow to the head with the chessboard.

The Russian news agency Interfax news agency quotes Kasparov's advisor Marina Litvinovich, who described the events as follows: Garry Kasparov, co-chair of the Fair Elections 2008 party, was subjected to an attack on Friday night. After a meeting with youth activists in Moscow he was approached by one of the participants with a chessboard. The young man asked the 13th chess world champion for an autograph, but then suddenly went behind Kasparov and delivered a strong blow to Kasparov's head, yelling obscenities as he did so. The attacker was taken out by the people present according to Litvinovich. Kasparov suffered an acute haematoma, but declined to seek immediate medical treatment.

Litvinovich added that Kasparov was meeting with the activists of youth movement in order to discuss tactics and strategy of creating a united democratic front.

What’s up in Nashville? A reader wrote: “I was at the super-nationals yesterday, Friday, and had a very fine luncheon.  One was immediately struck by the excitement of the children. Sadly, one of the largest events in US chess history and an important event that is newsworthy to Nashville and Tennessee has gone unnoticed by the news media. It is very sad to see what has happened. How can this be fixed? Why did it happen?”  Official site: www.???.com
