News & Notes
By ICCF GM Yoav Dothan

I will be happy to get comments or analyzed games – you can e-mail them directly to me.

News & Notes 15 In this latest installment of GM Dothan's familiar look at tactical twists and turns from recent master games, he takes us on a tour of 16 games (eight this week, and eight more next!) from the German Bundesliga's chess season, 17th-19th November 2006.
News & Notes 14 Sharpen your tactical vision with positions from 19 different games featuring such Super-GMs as Morozevich, Svidler, Shirov, Mamedyarov, Gelfand, Grischuk, and Van Wely along with a host of other Masters & GMs.  35 diagrams in all.  Plus: recent news from the world of international correspondence chess, including a new Game-of-the-Month feature by the 11th ICCF World Champion and news from the ICCF Olympiad XIV Final.
News & Notes 13 Notes on the LXXI Spanish Championship-  Leon Spain.  Vallejo Pons, Del Rio Angelis, Rivas Pastor, Narciso, Arizmendi Martinez, Lopez Martinez,
News & Notes 12 Notes on positions from the Capablanca Memorial Elite Havana tournament.  GM Dothan also passes along some guest analysis from SK Liburnija GM Rijeka CRO.  Today's positions feature GMs Bareev, Nogueiras, Ivanchuk, Miton, and Bruzon, among others.
News & Notes 11 Beautiful Combinations - Over 20 positions, culled from recent Master and Grandmaster games, where beautiful combinations were missed!  Includes games by Evgeny Alekesev, Luke McShane, Stuart Conquest, among others.

News & Notes 10

A look at the endgame K+R vs K+R+B, which seems to occur with surprising frequency, as this survey of seven examples from GM play over just the past two months demonstrates!  "This article deals with an endgame that should be drawn, but seven examples from the last two months proved that it is more problematic. All the examples are from top level chess - GM playing!  Here are the basics for a K+R VS K+R+B endgame:  Since the days of Philidor this endgame was analysed and today, with the tablebases to help us, it should be drawn except in very special positions, where the last pieces were exchanged and the king is on the border and soon mated.  The difficulty with the endgame is with the complicated variations that arise..."
News & Notes 9 First an intuitive rook sacrifice that absolutely defies computer analysis, then a fantastic ending, culminating with a queen prevailing over rook, knight and bishop.  Writes GM Dothan "This article is very different: it is dedicated to one game only, but the amount of work spent on this game is probably hundreds of hours.  Both players played very well.  Especially interesting to computer fans is the unbalanced position arising after Black's 22nd move.  The computer gives wrong assessments, and offers moves that are not the best.  Please have a look!"
News & Notes 8 Miniatures from August, games played by the likes of Morozevitch (slays his opponent in 15 moves) or see how Australia's rising star, IM David Smerdon, completely whitewashes his opponent in 13 moves!  Others include Golubev, Ward, Adams, etc.
News & Notes 7 Positions involving such luminaries as Tiviakov, Nijboer, and Almasi, along with a selection of positions involving some lower rated players, IMs, FMs NMs, even an expert or two!  Look at the gems he's found, and study the hidden possibilities he's uncovered.
News & Notes 6 Insightful look at could'a-would'a-should'a positions, culled from the games of the great players of today.  Lots of Correspondence News, too!  Check out these positions from Krush, Paehtz, Pelletier, Bruzon, Volokitin, Morozevich, Carlsen, among others.
News & Notes 5 Insightful look at could'a-would'a-should'a positions, this time combed from the category-19, Dortmund Sparkassen tournament games, including positions from Kramnik, Naiditsch, Aronian, Svidler, Michael Adams, Gelfand and others!
News & Notes 4 A collection of eight new games, the first being a very nice sacrifice that gives an overwhelming pawns attack...
News & Notes 3 This column contains five game from the GM tournament in Biel, and four correspondence games that I received with notes from the winners.  I add the invitation letter of the German Correspondence Chess Federation to the next ICCF World Cup.
News & Notes 2 "Five First Round Surprises" from the first round of the 3rd ACT Amsterdam tournament, played July 15, 2006.  GM Dothan writes: "In a Swiss-system tournament, the highest-rated player meet the lowest-rated player in the first round.  Usually the highest-rated win the games – of course, but  in the 3rd ACT Amsterdam tournament the first round produced many surprises.  Please see the differences in the rating of the players, in the next five games.  The first example is an excellent game of Mr. Yochanan Afek – the outcome certainly added some rating points to him..."
News & Notes 1 The fully annotated final round game from the recent 2006 Norwegian Championship between Super-GM Magnus Carlsen (pictured) and GM Berge Ostenstad, as well as general  Correspondence Chess news.
