A look at the
endgame K+R vs K+R+B, which seems to occur with surprising frequency, as
this survey of seven examples from GM play over just the past two months
demonstrates! "This article deals with an endgame that should be drawn,
but seven examples from the last two months proved that it is more
problematic. All the examples are from top level chess - GM playing!
Here are the basics for a K+R VS K+R+B endgame: Since the days of
Philidor this endgame was analysed and today, with the tablebases to
help us, it should be drawn except in very special positions, where the
last pieces were exchanged and the king is on the border and soon
mated. The difficulty with the endgame is with the complicated
variations that arise..." |

First an intuitive
rook sacrifice that absolutely defies computer analysis, then a
fantastic ending, culminating with a queen prevailing over rook, knight
and bishop. Writes GM Dothan "This article is very different: it is
dedicated to one game only, but the amount of work spent on this game is
probably hundreds of hours. Both players played very well. Especially
interesting to computer fans is the unbalanced position arising after
Black's 22nd move. The computer gives wrong assessments,
and offers
moves that are not the best. Please have a look!" |

Miniatures
from August, games played by the likes of Morozevitch (slays his
opponent in 15 moves) or see how Australia's rising star, IM David
Smerdon, completely whitewashes his opponent in 13 moves! Others

Positions
involving such luminaries as Tiviakov, Nijboer, and Almasi, along with a
selection of positions involving some lower rated players, IMs, FMs NMs,
even an expert or two! Look at the gems he's found, and study the
hidden possibilities he's uncovered. |

News & Notes 2 |
"Five First Round
Surprises" from the first round of the 3rd ACT Amsterdam tournament,
played July 15, 2006. GM Dothan writes: "In a Swiss-system tournament,
the highest-rated player meet the lowest-rated player in the first
round. Usually the highest-rated win the games – of course, but in the
3rd ACT Amsterdam tournament the first round produced many surprises.
Please see the differences in the rating of the players, in the next
five games. The first example is an excellent game of Mr. Yochanan Afek
– the outcome certainly added some rating points to him..." |
